Dee's Life Changing Story
“You’ve got 6 months”. At age 66, I was 6’ 4” tall, weighed 285 lbs, had high cholesterol, and was losing feeling in my hands and feet. My vision was failing and routine activities like walking up the stairs or getting in and out of the car were a challenge. Like so many people today, I was diabetic, and had let the disease ravage my body to the point my doctor was forced to number the days I had left. If I were to see my next birthday, a change of lifestyle was necessary. And it had to begin that moment.
Not really knowing what else to do, I began walking. At first, making it to the end of my cul-de-sac was all I could handle. Over time though, these short distances would turn to blocks and the blocks to miles. What I ate changed as well. T-bones became turkey, and bacon and eggs gave way to oatmeal and raisins. The latter would prove especially difficult for me as I seemed to be hungry and dragging by the time I put down my breakfast bowl each morning. This led to the eventual development of Dee’s Cereal.
Within a year of changing my lifestyle, I had dropped 80 pounds and no longer needed to take insulin. My cholesterol level had been cut in half, blood pressure normalized, eyesight began improving, and feeling slowly returned to my hands and feet. I was by all counts healthy, and by no counts dead. The only negative was that it had taken me so long to get started in the first place.
It’s now been more than a decade since I had some sense knocked into me and turned my life around. When I look back at these past years of photographs, of grandchildren, of stories made and told, I am eternally indebted to the decision made in my 60’s for giving me the time I’ve had in my 70’s. It’s never too late to start adding life to your years. You’re holding an excellent first step right now.
